'Age of Punk' Textiles Project

So, this is the dress I created for my final textiles GCSE coursework. Although I decided to use the typical punk/rock based fabrics such as denim and tartan I didn't want to used the basic components like safety pins, studs and chains etc as that would make it quite heavy to wear. I kept the basic design quite simple but original. From the very start I knew I was going to used a peter pan collar but for the front design I originally planned to make three bows which vertically followed each other down the front of the dress and stopped before reaching the bottom half. However when I tried this out, my dress looked more like a clowns outfit than a festival frock so I decided to keep it simple with a small pocket on the right side. I got an A for this project which I am so pleased about as I probably worked the hardest for this than any of my other subjects. I don't get my whole folder back till the end of the year so round September, I think, but when I do I will upload the mood-board I made to inspire my design.

  2. I'm glad this helped! I would recommend firstly thinking of the fabric which would be more appropriate for a jacket/blazer. Creating this type of garment is a really good choice for the theme as leather and denim are popular fabrics for jackets/blazers and for the 'Age Of Punk'. Then you would have to consider embellishment, I think using safety pins for the fastening would be good. Other types of embellishment you could think about for this particular theme would be studs or even an applique (with an 'age of punk' related fabric such as tartan/lace. Hope this has help xx

  4. For me, the cheapest place with a verity of fabrics and patterns is fabric land,I'm not sure where your nearest store would be but there is an online site http://www.fabricland.co.uk/ Magazines such as simplicity and burda specialise in pattern templates so perhaps have a look at them. If you are making a body con I recommend a stretchy fabric perhaps a thin stretchy washed out denim. Also I don't know whether this is helpful or not but when you mentioned 'skull typed' I thought the back of the dress being turned into a skull by cutting the fabric. I was at a festival this year and saw many people wearing tops with shapes torn out, just a suggestion, hope this helped.
